Obituary of Berenice Walsh Braun
July 31st, 1927 – January 27th, 2021
Berenice passed peacefully in her sleep early in the morning at the end of a long, happy life well lived. Born in Newark, New Jersey to Edward and Anna Walsh, she grew up an only child, but always surrounded by friends and relatives. After the turmoil of World War Two, she met returned serviceman George Braun of Orange, New Jersey as he completed his studies at Lafayette College and they married in September 1950, a union that lasted until his death nearly 60 years later and gave them three sons, whom they raised in Northern Virginia where they had moved to follow George’s career with the Defense Department. After their retirement, they moved to Ocean View, Delaware, where she redirected her energies to her social groups including water aerobics and her true passion, bridge, as well as her volunteer service including her work with St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Meals on Wheels, and a host of other community service groups. She spent the last seven years of her life back in Northern Virginia, near two of her sons, and became a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church.
At the end, her work done, she went peacefully to be with God and with George and all those gone before, leaving behind her sons Richard (Leslie) and James (Vincent) of Northern Virginia, son Kevin (Sheryl) in California, her beloved grandchildren John Braun of California, Jacqueline Braun-McGee of Minnesota, and Rachel Braun of California, and great-granddaughters Chelsea and Evelyn.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Herndon, VA at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 12th followed by an inurnment ceremony at 1:00 at Fairfax Memorial Gardens.
In honor of Berenice’s life, contributions may be made to St. Anne's Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, DE and Casa San Francisco of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington, DE.
