Obituary of Mary Anne Oishi

Mary Anne Oishi, 72, died of myelofibrosis on July 17 in hospice care in her home at Ashby Ponds, Ashburn. She is survived by her husband, Roy, and children Jeffrey and Marie.

Mary Anne Michelini was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, and grew up in Bergenfield, New Jersey. After graduating from Adelphi University with a BSN, she worked as a public health nurse in Suffolk County, New York. Mary Anne loved nursing during her long career in public health, retiring as a school nurse in Fairfax County. She was responsible for many elementary schools during that time and made friends with students, parents, and staff. She met her husband on Long Island, New York, and moved with him to Herndon, Virginia, in 1976, where they lived until 2017, when they moved to Ashby Ponds, a retirement community. They joined the United Christian Parish (UCP) of Reston in 1977 and raised their children in the church. Jeffrey is now a physics professor at Bates College in Maine. Marie is a managing editor for Abrams Books and recently moved from New York City to Ashburn.

At UCP, Mary Anne served as a greeter and a member of the Preschool Advisory Committee. She was well known for her beautiful quilting, knitting, and other handiwork. At both UCP and Ashby Ponds she was active in needlework groups.

A memorial service will be held at Ashby Ponds in September.
