LTG Chambers was my VII Corps Commander at Kelly Barracks, Stuttgart West Germany (1982-1986??) I was a Captain in a Lieutenant Colonel's position, as the Deputy Operations Officers for the Corps Surgeon's Office. General Chambers would play basketball at the noonish hour with two of his security force and one other on his team. I knew the General to change the rules in the middle of game when his team was losing. LOL. Also, I had posted up on the General (me 6'4.5") when he was running to get his man with the ball. General Chambers ran into a WALL (me). Flop to ground he went with a few comments of, "man what you doing?". I helped him up, and we continued the game. Another thing, General Chambers, commented on, is "don't any of you say I kept you from getting back to work on time." while playing ball. I highly respected him, knew his medical issues, and his troop welfare concerns. Plus, we talked a little about his brother who was a general officer, as well. SLOW SALUTE......

Play basketball with him at Kelly Barracks In Germany was there from 1983 to 1987, used to accompany his wife to NCO Club to play the Slot Machine, I remember when they arrived his wife came into the photo lab where I worked, I took her Passport photo, I had just come from the gym and she asked why was I sweaty, i told her I had been playing basketball, she replied that her husband liked to play, not knowing he was VII Corps commander, I replied tell him to come to the gym and I would school him. He had a good since of humor, he would guard me and when I would get by him he would pull my shorts down so I wouldn’t get far. Great family, met his son Paul. I will always cherish those memories.

I was dual-hatted as the Commanding Officer (CO), A/8th Engineers (Combat) & 1st Brigade Engineer of the 1st Cavalry Division (1982-84) at Fort Hood, Texas, the latter encompassing some 350 square miles. The 1st Brigade CO was Col. (later Brig. Gen.) J.D. Collins (1983-85).
The 1st Cavalry Division Commanding General (CG) was Maj. Gen. (later Lt. Gen.) A.P. Chambers (1982-84).
All of the foregoing units were part of III Corps, whose CG was Lt. Gen. Walter F. Ulmer (1982-85).
My first memory of Lt. Gen. (then Maj. Gen.) Chambers was when I reported to him in his office at Fort Hood upon my assumption of command of A/8th Engineers (Combat). We had an interesting and encouraging exchange!
Another memory of Maj. Gen. Chambers was during REFORGER 83 (Return of Forces to Germany) when he greeted me and my jeep driver as we prepared to cross the Rhine River from Holland to (then West) Germany.
There are other memories of course. These, because Maj. Gen. Chambers was "not glued to his desk". He was instead a commanding general who was often out in the hinterland of Fort Hood during FTXs (Field Training Exercises).
The last time I talked with Lt. Gen. Chambers was while traveling in 1987 with my wife and daughter from Fort Hood to Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We stopped for gasoline at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, between Memphis, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia, the latter being where we would visit old friends.
There was a long line of cars at the PX (Post Exchange) self-service pumps. I got out of our Buick sedan and glanced down the line. Just by sheer coincidence, Lt. Gen. Chambers was standing outside his car wearing a short sleeve shirt and Bermuda shorts! I walked back to say hello. After exchanging salutes and a handshake, we spoke of our time in the 1st Cavalry Division. He was delighted to talk about those years.
By 1987, Lt. Gen. Chambers had relinquished command of VII Corps and was in his final command as CG, Third U.S. Army (dual hatted as Deputy CG, U.S. Army Forces Command) at Fort McPherson in Atlanta (East Point), Georgia. Lt. Gen. Chambers commanded VII Corps with its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany (1985-87), and retired after relinquishing command of Third U.S. Army in 1989. Sadly, VII Corps was inactivated in 1992 after participating in Desert Shield/Storm (1990-91). Likewise, Fort McPherson as closed in 2011 after some 125 years.
VII Corps...Fort McPherson...just like old soldiers such as Lt. Gen. Chambers, they simply fade away. This, as Gen. of the Army Douglas MacArthur phrased it in his farewell speech to congress in 1951.
Goodbye then. I enjoyed serving with you o'er the rolling hills of east central Texas where Gen. John Bell Hood's "The Yellow Rose of Texas" is like "Hill Country", still a rousing cavalry marching song.

My sincere condolences to the family, and the extended family of Airborne Brotherhood. i served under him in the early 70's in Mainz at Lee Barracks. I didnt know him personally, except in passing; but never heard an ill word of him. I believe him to have been 'firm, but fair', and no one can ask more of their commander. You will be sorely missed, Sir.

I wish I knew about his passing sooner; would have paid my respects in person. You are left with his spirit and memories. Be comforted in knowing you are surrounded by love.

Met LTG Chambers at the 1st Cav reunion in D.C. 1982. It was my first reunion. At the banquet, Andy stood up and said that right after dinner he wanted to have his picture taken with all the Vietnam veterans. Not the lifers or career soldiers but those of us who had volunteered or were drafted. There were only seven of us there. Only one of us never made another reunion, but everyone else came for years. Two of us, me and Tom Hartin, went on to be President of the 1st Cav Division Association. MOH recipient John Baca was with us and came back many times. I believe that it was Andy Chambers' welcome that night that was the beginning of our Welcome Home from our war. I had a dream about being at a big reunion and running into Andy again. He was wearing one of his khaki safari jackets. Incredibly, that was the night before I learned of his death a week ago Monday. I regret I didn't meet him in Germany when my 105mm battery supported the 509th Abn. Rest In Peace, Sir!

Condolences. Andy and I were great friends and close comerads from our challenges on the football field at Dunbar High school 1947-48 under Coach Jessie Chase to playing at Howard University 1949-52. We attended ROTC at Howard together and were commissioned 2d Lt in the Infantry of the U.S. Army. Andy was a great leader in all that he encountered. He was popular and a friend of many in school. A friend of all and a pace setter for all of his classmates. My condolences to his wife and family.

The passing of your husband and father causes both joy and sorrow in my heart and spirit. My heart is heavy because God called LTG Chambers home far too early for me to visit with him just one more time. I am joyful because I was able to spend quality time with LTG Chambers and all of you during my time on active duty in the Washington, DC area. I deeply enjoyed his company, his advice, his lessons learned, his guidance, and the fact that he made me a better officer, a better father, a better husband, and a better man because he shared himself with me. Ms. Linda (Mr. Bill), Andrew, Aaron and Chambers Family:
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in the loss of your loved one. I pray that the Lord will wrap his arms around each of you and give you comfort. General Chambers was a soldier. He was a true example of love, which is evident through his daughter Linda. I often heard Linda speak how an amazing man he was. The fact of him serving our country alone makes him amazing, making an enormous difference in the world and because of that he will never be forgotten.
May you too, like millions of us worldwide, look forward to the day when Jesus Christ calls all those from the memorial tombs to come out. At that time, all of the hurt that we experienced when we lost our loved ones will completely disappear and will be replaced with tears of joy. Again, please accept my sincere condolences.
Blessings and Courage,
