She was born June 7, 1935 in Washington DC, to Otto Sam Gilliam and Virginia Elizabeth Gilliam, and was married to James Henry Frye Sr. for 36 wonderful years, until James’ death in 1988.

She was a resident of Stafford, and later Spotsylvania, Virginia for many years, where she and James were farmers, marketing their vegetables at a produce stand in Fredericksburg, Virginia. They moved to the home of John and Elizabeth Bishop in Herndon, Virginia in 1987, where Shirley has resided for the past 30 years.
She loved children and was known as ‘Granny Frye’ to most of the children in the neighborhood, providing childcare services to many of them.
She loved a good mystery, spending much of her time reading mystery novels and watching mystery shows on television. She was a world-class baker; her apple pies and cinnamon rolls are legendary.
